Language and Literature of Qinghai Normal University

Methodology of Transcultural Study on Chinese Society and Culture” Invites

Professor Wang Yichuan to Deliver the Lecture on

Three Topics of the Literary Theory”

The fourth lecture of “Methodology of Transcultural Study on Chinese Society and Culture”, postgraduate general course of the first-level discipline Chinese Language and Literature of Qinghai Normal University, was delivered online by Professor Wang Yichuan on April 2th, 2022. The title of his lecture is “Three Topics of the Literary Theory”. Nearly 60 participants attended the lecture online, including postgraduates and teachers from College of Chinese Language and Literature of Qinghai Normal University, College of Transcultural Studies of Beijing Normal University, School of Arts of Peking University, as well as researchers of Academy of Plateau Science and Sustainability of Qinghai Normal University. Professor Liu Xiaolin, vice dean of College of Chinese Language and Literature, QNU, presided over the lecture.

This lecture is a part of the fruits of Professor Wang Yichuan’s years of research on theory of literature and arts, covering topics on Literature and Literary Theory, Archetype and Reconstruction, and Realism in China. This lecture uses a data system, in which there are poetry, fiction, drama as well as film and television works from the 20th century to the 21st century. Based on the Marxist theory of literature and arts, Professor Wang Yichuan went up through the Chinese literary theory and western literary theory. In today’s lecture, he focused on the classical concepts “archetype”, “realism” and “romanticism” repeatedly discussed in scholarly history and the concept of “cultural poetics” hotly discussed in recent years, sorted out the mainstream trend of thought in literature and art, and evaluated the creation achievements of diversified genres since China’s reform and opening-up for more than four decades, such as hit TV series Minning Town, The Age of Awakening, etc. Professor Wang Yichuan conducted a case study of World of Plainness. He pointed out that Lu Yao, a writer from Shaanxi province, presented a realistic body, a romantic heart and a hidden psychology of modernism in the creation of this novel, constructing the reality of triadic integration. From this novel, readers could review the ideal and faith of a Soviet youth hero Pavel Korchagin, experience the great changes in agriculture, rural areas and rural residents during the urbanization process of China’s rural areas in the new period, and discover the group image of perseverance. It was called “Chinese-style realism” by Professor Wang Yichuan. In his opinion, we should start from China’s reality, look around the world and construct Chinese literary theory. Today’s lecture had a complete theoretical system, logically rigorous and accessible. Although teachers and students in Xining and Beijing listened to it online, they felt as if they were personally on the scene, listening to a speech of extraordinary insight, exploring literary theories and experiencing the joy of thinking.

After the lecture, Professor Liu Xiaolin, vice dean of College of Chinese Language and Literature, QNU, had a conversation with Professor Wang Yichuan from the perspective of theory of literature and arts as well as modern literature. He recalled that he had been influenced by Professor Wang Yichuan’s works very early in his teaching and research. And this lecture was a valuable close academic exchange.  He spoke highly of Professor Wang Yichuan as a famous teacher and made a sincere invitation for him to deliver more lectures on behalf of the faculty and students of College of Chinese Language and Literature, QNU. Professor Li Guoying, former leader of School of Chinese Language and Culture, BNU, and dean of College of Chinese Language and Literature, QNU, spoke highly of Professor Wang Yichuan’s academic research and teaching achievements. According to Professor Dong Xiaoping, Professor Wang Yichuan’s elegant academic quality, scientific methods and teaching art benefited teachers and students in a variety of ways.
